5 Things To Ask Your Maternity Photographer Before Hiring Them

For many people, choosing a maternity photographer is their first time hiring a photographer. This can be very intimidating and overwhelming! There are literally hundreds of photographers, and it can be scary finding someone who is a good fit for you. That’s why I created this awesome guide to help all expecting mommas know what questions to ask as you search for a maternity photographer.

Scroll through to see all the questions, and of course, share this guide with someone you know who is on the search for a maternity photographer!

how to choose a maternity photographer

1. Can I see what a full gallery looks like?

Photographers only share their BEST work in their portfolio and social media. Asking to see a full gallery example will give you a better idea of what to expect for your session.

MY ANSWER:

I am always happy to share a full gallery with anyone who asks! I do also share a lot of my work that never makes my Instagram feed over on my blog, so be sure to check that out!

2. Do you have a client closet?

Choosing a maternity photographer should be based on their portfolio, BUT a client closet can be a really nice addition that makes everything easier for you. It can also save you money, since a lot of maternity gowns are $200-400 each (and up to $1500!), and you’ll only wear it once.

MY ANSWER:

Heck yes! I have an ever growing client closet of beautiful couture gowns, bodysuits, draping fabrics, and lingerie items. Every client has a wardrobe fitting appointment with me 2-3 weeks before the session to choose outfits, and it is SO MUCH FUN.

3. How many looks/outfits can we choose for the session?

It is very common for photographers to limit their clients to 1-2 outfit changes per session. This can be very important to know before choosing a photographer!

MY ANSWER:

I don’t limit the number of outfits my clients can wear for their session, but I do recommend at least 4-6 different outfits per session for the most variety.

4. Do you offer newborn, baby, and family photography?

I cannot stress the importance of this one enough. If you choose a maternity photographer who doesn’t offer baby and family photography, it is sort of a dead end street. It is easiest to find a photographer for maternity who can now be your permanent family photographer as well, instead of jumping around from photographer to photographer.

MY ANSWER:

Yes, yes, and yes! I do also have a “Baby’s First Year Bundle” package that is so popular. It includes a maternity, newborn, 6 month milestone, and first birthday cake smash session. Most clients choose this option because it is such a great way to document the first year, and it checks it off the to do list early!

5. How long is your image turnaround time after the session?

Every photographer is different. I have heard of photographers taking 6 weeks to edit, and I have also heard of photographers taking as little as a few days to edit. Be sure your photographer sets clear expectations for delivery time, and if you have any hesitations, be sure to discuss it with them!

MY ANSWER:

1-2 weeks after your session, I will sit down with you for your gallery viewing appointment, and you will view “soft edits” of your images to choose your favorites to order via my product collections! After you make your selections, I will have your digital images ready for you within 7 days. Prints do take a little longer to arrive though, so you will have all your physical products within 6 weeks of the gallery viewing appointment.
